4 Reasons to Choose a Diesel Motorboat

There's a huge range of things to consider when you're buying a new boat, but one of the most important debates will be between diesel and gasoline power. The type of engine you choose is going to have a major impact on everything from running costs to the reliability, so it only makes sense to give the matter plenty of thought.

Once you do compare the pros and cons, you're likely to find that diesel engines make more sense, and here are just four reasons why.

1. More Efficient

A gallon of diesel has greater energy potential than a gallon of gasoline. As such, diesel-powered boats are considerably more efficient than those powered by gasoline. This makes diesel engines a smarter choice for those who will spend plenty of time on the water. Those higher efficiency ratings mean you won't need to top up your tank as much — as an added plus, they also help lower your environmental footprint.

2. Longer Life

Gasoline engines are more complex than diesel engines. As such, a diesel engine will usually last many times longer before requiring a major overhaul. This makes them a better long-term investment, and it also means that diesel engines are considered more reliable. You can count on a diesel engine far longer than a gasoline engine, which is going to be particularly important if you plan on travelling far out to sea rather than sticking close to shore. Additionally, diesel engines are a touch more forgiving. While gasoline engines can develop problems when they aren't run regularly, diesel engines will remain dependable even when run infrequently.

3. Lower Cost

When comparing fuel for land vehicles, you'll generally find that diesel costs more per gallon than gasoline. However, this is reversed when you turn to marine engines. You'll tend to find that diesel is much cheaper to fill up with at the majority of docks. If you're going to be using your new motorboat frequently or plan on covering greater distances, the price difference is really going to add up.

4. Added Safety

Gasoline is more flammable than diesel, which can only ignite under intense pressure and a constant flame. Gas vapour is also heavier than air, which means it can settle unnoticed at the bottom of a boat. This is why diesel is considered a safer option for marine engines. The chance of an accident is indeed small, but it only makes sense to choose the safer option.
